“Wirksworth has a long tradition not only for excellent music in all its forms, but specifically for music in the open air; the annual Carnival at Whit brings a wide variety of musics along its route, the big Art and Architecture Trails Weekend of the Festival in September has usually featured ‘street music’ as part of its delights. Outdoor Music in Wirksworth was established in summer 2009 to build on this rich heritage.
We work with ‘partner organisations’ (Wirksworth Open Gardens, Stoney Wood Group, Wirksworth Festival, and New Opportunities Wirksworth to promote free outdoor music eventsaround the town. Most of our events are multi-venue, with programmed music including anything and everything from a solo harpist to a large choir, folk singers to a jazz trio to a string quartet, flamenco guitar to klezmer, Ukrainian dance band to acoustic soft rock.
We include everyone from novices who have scarcely performed in public before, right through to professional musicians who come, and come again, for the sheer pleasure of the wonderful venues atmosphere and audience response.

It doesn’t matter how well you play it, a kid with a kazoo or the finest professional can do it - because all that matters is how you play it. The empty garden hears you; five thousand passers by hear you. It doesn’t matter which - because all that matters is how you play it. Only the angels can hear it all; that’s what really matters."
